It’s been nine long years since the last time Global Connections, Inc. participated in Kansas City Corporate Challenge. Several of our athletic employees have been itching for a chance to display their prowess and they finally have their chance.

Members of the GCI team got together for a cookout at Friday’s kickoff party held at the Truman Sports Complex in Kansas City, Missouri. Dozens of participating teams represented their companies at the event, making this one of the biggest events of its kind in the nation.

“I hope our employees all participate and get something out of it,” Tom Lyons, CEO, said. “We always try to find things to get our employees involved outside of work, and this is one that has a lot of merit. Exercise is always good.”

Why is Global Connections back in KCCC after all these years? Michelle Washburn, Director of Human Resources, listed two reasons: It helps our wellness program by promoting healthier choices and it creates lasting memories.

“We realized some of our funniest stories come from corporate challenge,” Washburn said. “You really get to know people. Like, wow, Tom is the most competitive person ever in volleyball.”

Global Connections has already gotten off to a competitive start, thanks to Zach J. and Ryan B. finishing second in Disc Golf for the H Division. With more than a month of events left to go, there are sure to be more medals to earn and more friends to be made.

“If we’re going to spend this much time with people during the day,” Washburn said, “I’d like to at least be able to chat with them and have a good time.”
