Global Connections Inc. Travel Consultant Jacky Butler specializes in romance travel packages, so she knows a thing or two about what makes a good romantic retreat. When your resort can impress Jacky, you know you have top-notch accommodations on your hands. That what makes Secrets Cap Cana Resort and Spa in the Dominican Republic so impressive.
Jacky recently returned from a five-day fam trip with her husband and had a lot to say about this year-old all-inclusive resort. If you’re looking to celebrate a honeymoon, anniversary or destination wedding in style, look no further than this exquisite beach retreat.
What were your first impressions of Secrets Cap Cana?
Secrets is a high-end resort chain throughout Mexico and the Caribbean. This is the sixth one I’ve been to. It’s the newest property they have, having only been open a year.
Of all of them, this was probably my favorite for several reasons:
- Everything is state of the art.
- The rooms are huge.
- Wi-Fi is free throughout the whole resort. The Internet connection worked great even on the beach, which is rare.
- Phone calls are free to the US.
- You don’t have to wear wristbands like you do at other all-inclusives.
- We were 20 minutes from Punta Cana airport, so we didn’t have to travel far.
- Unlimited food and unlimited drinks.
I book trips for clients to the Dominican Republic all the time, but this was my first time to that area. It’s probably the No. 1 place in the Caribbean my clients travel.
Do the rooms live up to the pictures on the Secrets website?
The photos don’t even do our room justice.
We stayed in the Preferred Club Suite Ocean View. The bedding had the finest sheets. The living room had a sofa, a chair and a big-screen TV in the wall. There was even a desk area.
Our bathroom had a shower as big as my cubicle. It was like its own room and featured a rain shower. I didn’t want to get out of it. It was pure luxury.
We also had a Jacuzzi on the lanai. The hot tub was great at night since it was big enough for two people and very private. They also have swim-out suites where you go right off your patio into the pool (we were up higher overlooking those rooms).
Can you say the same about the food?
This was the best food I’ve had at an all-inclusive. It was all gourmet dining throughout the eight restaurants.
A lot of travelers don’t realize that all all-inclusive resorts are not equal. Some of these five-star resorts, like Secrets, will give you lobster, steak and top-shelf premium alcohol.
It spoils you (laughs). You don’t have to pay for anything and the gratuities are all included. Then, when you get home and go to a restaurant, you have to remember to pay.
What activities were there?
They have really good entertainment every night – comedy shows, fire eaters and all that. It’s not really a party place, so activities shut down around 11 p.m. The property does have a night club.
There was a big pool in the main area with activity directors running games – water volleyball, a newlywed game and more.
Then down on the beach, you have various watersports. You have to be into the beach and water – that’s why you go to this area. If you like casinos and shopping, this isn’t the place to go. You’re pretty isolated in Cap Cana – the closest shopping was 20 minutes away in a little village.
What else stood out at the resort?
The service was fantastic. It didn’t hurt that I upgraded to the Preferred VIP area. That means you get private concierge, private butlers, your own private pools, private restaurant, and private beach area. That was phenomenal because it was very quiet. You do have to pay more for the Preferred side. The private beach is the main reason you’ll want to upgrade. And that’s the first time I’ve seen a VIP area with a private beach. Even if you don’t upgrade, there isn’t a bad area at the resort.
Juanillo Beach was just unbelievable. It was white powder sand and they had little huts you could lie under. You could snorkel right off the beach. We kayaked and the water was really smooth.
Secrets has a lot of honeymoon amenities as well. They will set you up on the beach with a candlelight dinner. You have your own waiter who will bring champagne and sprinkle rose petals all over your bed.
Overall, it was one of the most relaxing trips I’ve ever had.
Did you explore the surrounding area?
Cap Cana is an exclusive area in Punta Cana with five-star resorts within a gated community. There are several resorts by the marina, but it’s all private and safe. They check everything when you go through those gates: passports, drivers and more. When you leave the vicinity, they take make sure to know who is leaving the property and who is coming back. It’s a fantastic place.
There are four other properties in the Cap Cana area and we took a walk down the beach to look at those.
We took a free shuttle to the marina, just to walk around and look at the yachts and boats. But honestly, we wanted to go back to the resort. We didn’t want to go anywhere else while we were there!
To whom would you recommend this resort?
Many all-inclusives in the Caribbean cater to adults only, specifically couples, so it’s popular for romantic getaways.
This resort is for people who want a very romantic trip and who are celebrating something special. Usually people going on their honeymoon don’t mind spending more because it’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. It could also be for an anniversary or destination wedding. This is a luxury property, so you get what you pay for.
If you are more budget conscious and still want to stay in a nice place, I always recommend staying fewer days in a five-star resort rather than staying more days in a three-star where you won’t be as happy. Think of all the amenities you will get, plus the service and food.
